If you are like me, house cleaning is a job that gets constantly put off. I just don’t feel like there is enough time for me to mop, sweep, dust, scrub, scrape, and polish. Thankfully, there are people out there who have been doing this kind of thing for years. These professionals know the ins and outs of the job, and they will tell us the secrets to prevent it from taking over our lives.

Okay, let’s start in the kitchen. When attempting to scrub and sanitize this massive filth and germ attractor, be sure to start on the right side of the stove and work clockwise around the room. This will leave the stove, typically the dirtiest part of the kitchen, for the last task. By doing this, you are reducing the amount of dirt and grime you spread to other parts of the kitchen during your cleaning process.

While in the kitchen, make sure that you disinfect the sink when scrubbing it. Disinfecting and sanitizing this area regularly is very important because it has been proven that the kitchen sink actually contains more germs than the toilet bowl. Now moving on to the dishwasher, I find myself rationalizing that I can skip this machine because it’s getting cleaned every time I use it. Well, I could not be further from the truth. The dishwasher is home to caked on grime and many nasty germs like e-coli. Because of this, it needs to be wiped out regularly with a combination of baking soda and bleach. This combination will kill those germs while removing old, crusty food.

To avoid the manual labor of scrubbing the bottom of your oven, a great tool to use is an oven liner. This great invention can be wiped with a towel and placed in the dishwasher to be cleaned and used over and over. It will prevent the black soot that is so prevalent in ovens from coating the bottom of yours.

A great time saver when dealing with house cleaning is to clean as you go. A great example of this can be illustrated in the kitchen. As you prepare a meal, fill the sink with hot, soapy water. Place the preparation dishes in the water to soak as you enjoy the meal, and then do the same with the dinner dishes. By the time dessert is over, all of the dishes can be transported from the sink to the dishwasher with little or no scrubbing. Along these same lines, be sure to wipe up any spills as they happen. They will be much easier to eliminate this way, than if you wait until they harden.

Another time saver when it comes to house cleaning is to simply wash your shower curtain liner with a few towels in the laundry. This method will be much faster than trying to scrub the mildew and grime off by hand, and it is not nearly as disgusting either. Also, to easily tame the toilet, simply pour some tang in the bowl and let it stand for a few minutes. The citric acid works as a scrubber to eliminate all of those nasty stains.

Composite Decking is the leading building product used to build decks in America and in many parts of the world. Many composite deck brands also give the appearance of real wood instead of nasty plastic. The appeal of using recycled materials to create an outdoor deck has many builders and homeowners excited and eager to start building right away. However, because composite decking is not real wood, it behaves differently throughout the course of the year.

Heres the first thing you need to know: While hardwood decking expands and contracts on its width due to environmental changes in temperature and moisture levels, composite decking will expand and contract on its length. This is an important distinction to make. Lets just say that if the ends of your composite deck boards butt against your home, you may want to give some breathing room while installing. Not much, of course, but enough to allow the boards to expand and to prevent buckling, warping, and cracking.

Now comes the fun part, installing composite decking. Many builders say that screwing directly through the top of the board is just fine. I couldnt disagree more. Just because composite boards are made of recycled content doesnt mean that theyre cheap. Screwing top down will mean that your finished deck will look decent from far away. And, the closer you get, the more dots aka screw heads youll see. Now the naysayers out there will say that there are composite deck screws that have colored heads that match the decking. Sure enough, theyd be right. However, what those special decking screws or any other brand for that matter cant do is prevent the problems of mushrooming, mold, and decay that this method of deck installation ends up with? Why? Because that method is the one of the causes of those problems!

Lets explore this further. Lets say you rush through your decking installation. Top down screws everywhere! Now, fast forward a few months, a year, maybe two. Theres been a lot of rain, maybe some snow, ice, and a lot of time for water to sit and rest around the heads of each screw. Gravity being what it isat least SOME water will seep into the crevices that arise. Where did these crevices come from? Think about it. Those screws are driven through the deck board into the joist so that your deck board wont move. But, if you remember from above, all types of decking will move. So, with this in mind, the decking moves on its length and the screw…does it stay in place? No, it will move around too. These movements can be incremental, or they can be noticeable right away depending on how well the decking was manufactured and/or the climate you are in. Regardless, the result of water seeping into the screw hole will lead to mold and eventually decay. Two things that will make any deck look horrible and an eyesore.

So, how do you prevent this from occurring? Use hidden deck fasteners tailor made for composite decking. A composite deck fastener will be installed between each board straight down into the joist. You might have to use a biscuit jointer or router to fashion the grooves yourself, or if you bought pre-grooved composite deck boards, all youll have to is lay the board down, straighten it according to your plan, and then install the composite fastener using a screw and drill. Thats it. Simple as pie, not to mention an effective way to make your outdoor garden deck look as good as new for a longer period of time.

Homeowners planning on interior painting often struggle over the issue of trim color during the planning process. Often they plan wall colors, on account of what they have seen in a magazine or while visiting a friend’s home. Maybe they have a particular fabric in mind and want to match a color in the fabric for the walls in that room. Anyway, the problem arises with what to do with the trim for that room. Is it possible to use a different trim color than the existing trim being used in other areas of your home?

While there is no absolute rule about trim color, that if broken, would cause you to be arrested by the color scheme patrol, there are some things you should consider.

1. The trim and ceilings of your home are what establishes a unified look and feel throughout your home. You can change your walls to any color that you like, or that fits with the theme you have planned for the interior of your home. The use of one color on the trim and ceilings will give you a smooth transition between wall colors as you travel throughout your home. Without this consistency, your home takes on a feeling of disunity.

2. White trim and some off-white colors will go with any wall color. That is why it is so popular. It gives you much greater flexibility in interior color coordination and design. Deciding to paint your trim a color other than white will limit your decorating options; however, I have seen some marvelous color co ordinations while using more color for trim.

If you really want to change the color of the trim for a particular room, then test the color. Try to get a feel for how it will impact the rooms or halls adjacent to that room. Will it be completely separated by a door? Will the door be closed most of the time? If the room is open to other areas of the house that are easily seen, how will that impact the color theme for the other parts of your home? You don’t want to put a lot of time and effort into painting a room if in the long run you’re not happy with how it makes the rest of your home look. Test the color on a door jamb or baseboard and then stand back and get a feel for what it does for unity of passage from other rooms to that room. It would be a good idea to wait a few days to see if you grow tired of the transition between colors. Often what we initially think looks good, loses its appeal over time.
